TiVo HD Video Recorder for Cable TV
Virgin vs Sky: New TiVo Box From Virgin Competes with Sky HD
Virgin Media is set to launch a new TiVo box in May of this year, intensifying the Virgin vs Sky battle for the best subscription TV provider in the UK. The box will have a 500gb capacity, and will provide customers with an entirely new way of accessing catch-up TV services.
Sky has always been the long time ruler of subscription TV, with its top-end 1TB receiver providing an easy to use facility with a sharp but conventional style. The TiVo box may take customers a little more time to get used to, but it houses an impressive search function, with suggestions for users to find related content to their favourite shows. It can even link you to online YouTube content.
For Sky customers, it is easy to access a large variety of on demand programming, with additional memory available in the 1TB box for the Push Anytime VOD service. This refreshes itself overnight, and provides a platform for big movie and TV premieres. Additionally, if you are a Sky broadband customer, you'll get the Anytime Plus service, with an expanded viewing choice. However, the Virgin TiVo box works on the fastest broadband service in the UK. It can therefore deliver an unprecendented amount of on demand content, whenever you like.
The only place where Virgin lag behind currently is in the provision of linear HD and 3D TV. The TiVo has fewer linear HD channels than Sky, although all leading services are still provided. This does not necessarily mean that Sky is the better provider, as Virgin still provide access to a wide variety of non-linear HD content through their VOD service.
Sky, as an early 3D technology advocate, has plenty to offer in the way of 3D TV. It currently boasts the UK's only 3D channel, which includes sports and entertainment, most of which is included in the top HD subscription package. There are also movies available on a PPV basis, providing more content than is likely to be released on Blu-Ray in a year. Virgin, however, are not big on 3D provision, as of yet, with their movie and documentary content being provided just as "me too" scheduling.
Both Sky and Virgin packages come comparatively priced, with additional offers such as free set-up offered during promotional runs. Freeview options are available for customers who are not sure about opting for Pay TV. Freesat hooks up to a regular Sky dish, and offers some BBC channels in full HD. Catch up TV is also available online through the BBC iPlayer, with itvPlayer available soon. However, for the ultimate in TV choice and catch-up, opting for Sky or Virgin is a better option. Sky wins out when it comes to 3D and HD choices, but it has some catching up to do compared with Virgin's generous catch-up TV provision.
