If I have RCA receivers with Direct TV, can I buy one from ebay that is a Hughes Direct TV receiver?

Would it work, or would I have to get an RCA one? And do you know if I would have to get the access card activated?

oh, it'll totally work. What matters is that it's a DirecTV specific receiver. The only exception to this rule is the HR10-250 because it will not get the HD signals anymore (so it's just a glorified DVR now).

What you will want to do is contact the seller and ask for the receiver ID number (RID) and/or Access Card number (on the back of the card above the barcode). Then call customer support for DirecTV (1 800 531 5000) and have them look up the receiver to make sure it's an OWNED one (if not, you will activate a 18 or 24 month commitment).

You will then also want to request a new access card ($20) because the CSRs will not activate the old one for you. The card takes about 3-5 days to ship and is a good investment because if you convince the CSR to activate the old card you WILL be responsible for any and all charges on the old card (regardless of date) and some of them can have up to $200 in pay per view orders that still have yet to be billed.

Once you get the receiver and new card set up (plugged in, connected to the satellite and TV, etc.) you just call customer support again and give them the numbers for activation (the RID, serial number, model and manufacture names and access card number - sometimes they'll just want the RID and access card). They'll get it going for you right away.
